mowing the lawn

February 4, 2012

Filed under just for fun, M and me.

My dad mowed our Manitoba back 40 on Christmas Eve. Just because he could. An out-of-the-blue decision turned out to be a family affair and so much fun! Fired up the old Cockshutt 20, with his family cheering him on and not a speck of snow to be seen –  he was happier than seagull with a french fry!

Look at that grin!! I love my dad, he’s the best : )

i’m loving all the goal setting i read about online in early January. Something so refreshing about it all. So I decided to start my own! With the new year kicking off with a big move to Vancouver Island, new jobs for M + myself things are off to a rockin’ sort of DREAM BIG start. and we love it! I’ll round off the post with some photos of my family absolutely killing the first annual Pfahl family Christmas photobooth. i hope you laugh, a lot. we did!

1. spend more time with M + my family

2. eat clean (trendy but what the heck)

3. develop regular workout habits

4. keep in better touch – call all my friends + family more often..facetime, skype, emails, texts or good ol’ snail mail. Im going to make it happen!

5. be positive

6. invest in slideshows for my clients

7. learn more about flash + lighting

8. attend CPhA conference with my dad (i skipped out last year)

9. take another thai cooking class

10. go on a missions trip

11. book fall/winter holiday with aeroplan points

12. start making designs for house plans – dream big?!

13. lend a hand  to my friend Sara around bird’s eye cove farm – however i can be of most help. Water girl??

14. plan to make more time for life – work a little less!

15. allocate more quality time in prayer + the word

16. laugh daily, and try to race M to be the first to make the other laugh daily. we’re slightly competitive so this should be fun!

17. start pinning new ideas for a blog rebrand + reVAMP!

18. plan a spring trip to Manitoba + another Christmas trip. Lots of babies coming in 2012 to cuddle : )

19. DIY DIY DIY! give my new home some style. good thing M’s handy!

Cassandra + Ken

November 10, 2011

Filed under just for fun, M and me., she said yes!

Cass + Ken sweet couple from Vernon who I met a few years back on the streets of Osoyoos. A fun loving couple always up for an adventure, were always looking for an opportunity to bring Malcolm + I to famous Douglas Lake Ranch where the two of them grew up! Douglas Lake Ranch is Canada’s Largest Working Cattle Ranch. With a current cattle herd of approximately 20,000 head. It was established way back in 1884 and is a sprawling half a million acres. Loads of history in all the buildings and landmarks. Ken used to cowboy on the ranch and was eager to show us the sites! We jumped at the opportunity a few weekends ago and toured the home ranch, visited with Ken’s family and made our way into the back 40 – errr – 400 000 to send the night huddled up in a historic cowboy bunker. We got the fireplace roaring, broke out the table games, lit the propane lamps and had such a great time!

I’ll also mention that  Cassandra + Ken celebrated their 5th wedding anniversary the summer!! So naturally some photos to mark the occasion : ) these two – just beautiful, in and out.

Our wedding was featured as a top finalist in the RW & co we do, weddings contest! Hip hip hurray!!

Please help us win by submitting your vote here on the RW & co website! Look for Malcolm and his mighty men

Thanks so much!

M and I took a mini vacation to Vancouver Island to relax and to catch up with family and our good friends! We completed a gorgeous hike at Shaw Creek where the trees are supersized and the lush fern and moss undergrowth made it feel like you were walking on clouds. We learned that red dye no. 9 makes me a bundle of crazy energy and a whole lotta fun!  The boys worked on M’s bro’s new home together, I went to the spa. : ) Spent a few nights porch monkeying with our bests’ Doug and Jamie from Out of the Storm  backpacking adventures. Business is starting to pick up for these two and the building looks awesome! A must to check out if you or someone you know is planning to hike the West Coast Trail or any trail, or going anywhere awesome. Or maybe you know someone who needs someone awesome to go with them? Either or! We spent an afternoon on Shawnigan Lake wake skating behind a 15ft tinny using a a surfboard (make do with what you have right?). best day!

We caught up with the Skoretz family too! Remember that gorgeous barn we got married beside last summer? Well…that farm yard is in for a bit of an upgrade thanks to Macdonald + Lawrence. A second barn is being erected on the property. A one-of-a-kind timber framed event barn is currently in the works. Each timber hand selected for its own unique characteristics, every brace curve shaped from naturally bent trees.  no metal nails, all peg and dowling. This project is one that near to our hearts. We are so proud of their courage and excited for Bird’s Eye Cove Farm and what is in store for them. Follow the progress HERE.

We squeezed in a baby bump photo shesh for our friends Catherine + Ryan , who welcomed their baby girl Aug 1, 2011! yay!

We wrapped up the holiday extravaganza with a impromptu silly session on the ferry while trying to think of what we could do on the ferry. It was fun! Last stop our Walter cousin get-together in Coquitlam to snuggle the newest addition and chow a tasty BBQ!

M and me: cowboy up

May 25, 2011

Ok so M and me, we have great friends. I reckon the BEST. They live all over the place, they are unique and intelligent people with interesting stories, deep loud thundering belly laughs, they validate us, they have generous hearts, open minds and desires for adventure. we love them.

This weekend a variety of our friends met up to head to the North Okanagan area of Heffley Creek.  A speck on the map (if its even on the map?) north of Kamloops. Thanks to our mighty leader Mr. Jette we made his ranch property our home for the weekend. How sweet it was. 8 of us gathered, with 4 furry friends in his comfy cabin. Nestled at the base of Sunpeaks Mountain we spent our lazy days exploring the area and off-ing the odd gopher or two. Apparently they are quiet the nuisance around cowboy town. Ms. Sera our self-proclaimed cook kept our tummys full with tasty nom-noms from the kitchen (no gophers made it into the kitchen). we thank you!  We canoed, fished, watched the trout spawn as bald eagles whistled over head. With Phils help, Sera fell out of the canoe. puppies and canoe paraphernalia scattered. enter belly laughs, loud, looong and thundering. Sera wasn’t laughing, and Phil didnt crack a smile but we all know he was laughing on the inside. haha Phil.  It also must be noted that clearly we are the most fashionable campers around with lots of plaid, canvas, funny boots and wool to go around. The mandate for the rainy days was to grab whatever you could get your dirty hands on and wear it proud. even bandanas? We convoyed up to Wells-Grey Provincial park for some more hiking and to see famous Helmeken falls. stunning!  After the sun went down we huddled up around raging bonfires, covered in even more plaid, laughing at the dogs and each otherdrying our boots out and  kicking up our barefoot hobbit feet up to some good ol’ two stepping country tunes.

our may-long looked a little like this…

M and me: wild asparagus hunt

April 27, 2011

Yes wild asparagus hunt. Almost sounds dangerous. Right? but its not. Asparagus grows wild in certain areas surrounding Osoyoos, its something we heard through the local chatter. What an odd novelty to have in our own backyard. M being the avid hiker, hunter that he is found it. No sweat. I remember the first time he came home with it a few years back he had totally hit the vegetable jackpot. His laughter was infectious as he brought out one bag, two bags, three bags…He picked so much asparagus you needed both ARMS to carry it all. No way, you could not fit it in the sink. No way. This weekend we set out to check up on the top-secret patch and see how things were coming along. Picked a little bit to have with our Easter salmon fillet, fresh and so so tasty. It was smokin hot outside breaking tempertures above 20 degrees, we skipped Spring here in Osoyoos and cut straight to the good stuff. Bring on the tourists. Right?

Anyways we tromped through the bush. Dodging cactus. I got a grass sliver and Malcolm pulled it out for me…with his teeth. Awe thats love baby, love baby. Thanks. I found a pheasant feather, or is that peasant? M “pheasant babe, ffffffeasant”. Right got it. Pretty feather thoughI think I’ll keep it. Note to self: barefeet and gumboots dont mix Note to reader: I realize it was +20 I wore the gumboots to ward off my tick phobia, they are gross. M lead the way for the most part until I thought I had found my own patch, “no sweets thats not Asparagus…careful, um that might be posion ivy”. I drop the dead plant and burst into hysterics. eeeeps. Next time i’ll leave the leading to M I guess and good thing too he can nav those trails like nobody’s business.  He’s my ace in my back pocket ; )

PS.  I ended up with a tick anyways, I found it at home 3 hrs post-departure from bush.  I screamed so loud I got in trouble from M.  Seems as though he thought “something was really wrong”. umm something was REALLY WRONG!!  That pretty much wraps the start and finish to my hiking season folks, hanging up the hikers till October.

We took a little break from the daily grind. Truth is, a 5 week break. Much needed, and well worth every single second. We began with 9 days in Manitoba celebrating two lovely weddings and catching up with friends in between, then off to a handful of stunning Thai islands for  3.5 weeks of adventure!  Due to popular demand from facebook friends (thanks guys!) I’ve posted a couple photos from our trip! With way too many photos to parouse, I choose one  from Ko Phi Phi Leh, Hat Railay, and Ko Tao three of our favorite destinations. What was my highlight of the trip? Getting to spend all day everyday unplugged, in island paradise, with delicious eats, focussing one-on-one on my relationship with M.  Perfection! I will certainly post more photos in the next couple of weeks once I’ve shaken this mega dose of jet lag that I am presently dealing with!
